The work begins (Volume 1) with a short discussion of the battle of Cannae, fought by Hannibal against the Romans in 216 BC, then Frederick the Great’s battle of Zorndorff, and Napoleon’s battle of Austerlitz, using them as a basis for the concept of Vernichtungskrieg, the war of annihilation, as fought on the battlefield.  With this as a basis, the man who designed the famous “Von Schlieffen Plan” for the invasion of France in 1914 proceeds to demonstrate how the Prussians used this concept in the 1866 campaign against Austria and the 1870 campaign against France.  Volume 2 picks up on this and is the portion of the work that covers the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

Lots of battle maps and orders of battle.
