Bernard of Saxe-Weimar’s story starts with his family losing its struggle for his rightful inheritance and forcing him into a military career.  He joined the Swedish Army, under Gustavus Adolphus, and when Gustavus was killed at Lutzen, Bernard became the principal military commander of the Protestant forces in Germany until his death in 1639.  These two volumes provide an account of the battle of Lutzen and then go into greater details of the subsequent battles that Bernard fought, including his most important, the siege and capture of Brisach.  This is an excellent study on one of the greatest and least known of the military commanders of the 17th century.
