France had conquered and subdued Tokin (now Vietnam), but there was a constant issue with the Black Flag Pirates in the north, along the upper regions of the Clear River and in the mountains that line the Vietnamese-Chinese border.  In response to the raids by these pirates (really more bandits, as they were not afloat) the French twice sent out columns to attack and destroy them.  Struggling through jungles and over mountains, the French literally cut a path to their target, the elusive Black Flag Pirates.   Nine maps are provided to illustrate the actions.  It is an interesting work on an obscure military operation.
